Creativity does not start in the mind. It starts in the body and the emotions. Before an idea is thought, it is first felt. The body has access to vast and subtle intelligence beyond the reach of the conscious mind.
Making art is similar to giving birth. There is something inside the body that wants to come out. You can’t force the process. The idea – just like the baby – needs to be nurtured and developed over time. When it is ready to be born, it will happen automatically. Making art is the process of guiding whatever is inside you – whatever wants to be born – out of the body and into the world. As a creator, you are not solely responsible for the birth, but are assisting the universe in the magic of creation.
When it comes to creativity, there is a time to rest, a time to learn, a time to contemplate, and a time to create. Before you give birth, you first need to get pregnant (metaphorically speaking). That is, you need to experience life. You must fill your cup. You must venture away from your comfort zone to learn and feel and fail and expand the scope of your perception.
Creativity needs raw materials to work with. Your body must be pregnant with energy and emotion to express. Art is not a mental construct. It is the release of something bottled up inside you, something that is trying to get out. Life experiences, both good and bad, give us more material to work with, more emotions and data to process.
The process of making art is about transmuting the energy and emotions of the body through creative expression.
