The mind is a tricky thing. We tend to believe that our thoughts are always a reliable source of information. But the mind is just a tool. And like all tools (a hammer, for example) it can be helpful or harmful.
A good question to keep in mind is: Are my thoughts coming from my ego or my higher self?
The ego is our conscious mind which gives us a sense of identity. It can be referred to as the lizard brain because it developed prior to the more emotionally attuned neocortex in mammals. The ego operates in survival mode, always scanning the environment for threats. This can cause unnecessary, and often chronic, anxiety.
If the mind is an ocean, the ego is like the crashing waves on the surface. When we identify with our ego-thoughts, it can feel like being caught in a storm, tossed in the waves of mental activity.
But you are not your thoughts. Beneath the crashing waves, you are a vast and still ocean. When we identify with the ocean of consciousness, rather than the waves of mental chatter, we tap into the wisdom and creativity of the higher self.
The higher self is the aspect of ourselves that lives beyond the ego identity. This is our deepest source of wisdom, intuition, and creativity. The good news is that our higher self is always with us, one shift in perception away. Having a creative practice helps us move from a state of reactivity to purposeful creation.
Creativity is natural. we only need to strip away the social programming and limiting beliefs that distract us from our creative nature.
