Life lessons for creative humans
Field notes from the artist path
Being an artist isn’t only about having talent or making art. It’s a way of being and of seeing the world.
There are many life lessons that apply to the creative process, and vice versa.
Following are seven of my biggest takeaways from walking a creative path:
1. Let it come to you
I used to try to force things to happen, both in life and art. This always got me into trouble.
There is a higher wisdom beyond the conscious ego mind. When we slow down and listen, we are guided.
2. Sensitivity is a strength
Not everything can be understood logically. Sometimes intelligence speaks in the felt sensation of our bodies and emotions.
Everything you feel is data to transmute into expression. Be sensitive to what your body is telling you. The deeper you feel, the more inspiration you have to draw from.
3. There is no right way
I used to think there was a right or wrong way to live or make art. Then I realized that each person has their own unique voice and style. There are as many ways of being as fingerprints.
Sing the song only you can sing. You can’t reach your destination by following somebody else’s directions.
4. Remain a student
When you pay attention, the whole world is a classroom and every day has something to teach you. Inspiration is hiding in music, books, travel, documentaries and conversations with strangers.
We stay young when we remain curious and open to new possibilities instead of thinking we have all the answers.
5. There is no hurry
Every life and project has its own timeline. You can’t force a garden to grow faster or a baby to be born sooner.
Don’t measure your progress compared to anyone else. A masterpiece isn’t made overnight. Some ideas need time to grow deeper roots before blooming.
6. Talent is overrated
You have to be bad at something before you can be good at it.
The word “art” comes from the Latin “ars,” which means skill or craft. Being an artist is a skill that is developed. To excel at anything, you have to love it enough to keep coming back, even when it’s not working.
Dedication is more important than talent.
7. Be brave
When you walk your own path instead of following the crowd, not everyone will understand.
At times you may feel lost or misunderstood. This is totally normal. The path of the artist is one of curiosity and adventure, not predictability.
Trust your inner vision more than the noise of the crowd. Every great discovery happens outside your comfort zone.
