Humans are creative by nature. That doesn’t mean everyone is meant to make traditional art like poetry, music, or paintings. Creativity can be expressed in a number of ways: business, relationships, social media content, or how you decorate your home. Being creative means turning your imagination into reality, in whatever form that takes.
But our society is not always a healthy environment for creativity to thrive. Toxic patterns of relating and economic pressures cause many to live in a reactive state of fear and self-doubt.
When our survival becomes a burden, it’s not easy to make creativity and self-expression a priority.
There are two mindsets with which we can approach life: survival mode and creation mode. Survival mode is about being reactive to external conditions, always on the defensive, anxious about all the bad things that could happen. Creation mode is about living from the inside-out, using the natural tools of intuition, imagination, and ingenuity to shape our lives with purpose and intention.
Living in survival mode means our creative impulse is suppressed. And suppressed creativity, like a suppressed emotion, festers below the surface, causing slow and steady harm to our emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
Each of us has a meaningful reason for being alive. But this purpose is not written down and handed to us when we are born. Purpose is like happiness. Nobody can give it to you. You have to make it yourself. Creativity is your natural ability to imagine and actualize new ideas. This is a valuable skill. If we never learn how to create with intention, we become beholden to the changing tides of social expectations and trends.
Developing a creative practice, no matter how small, is a way to reclaim your power. Creativity is an act of sovereign expression, a way to direct the mind’s awareness with purpose and intention. Creativity teaches us how to conceive, nurture, and actualize original ideas. It gives us the courage to question social conventions and pave our own path. It inspires us to see the world from new perspectives. And while living in creation mode is not without challenges, it is always worth it.
