“A poem is a naked person” – Bob Dylan
There is no creativity without vulnerability. The act of creation requires us to put down our guard, open up, and look within ourselves, expressing whatever thoughts and feelings we find.
This can feel vulnerable and embarrassing. It might not be safe, it feels, to share our innermost thoughts and feelings in public, or even with ourselves. We are only opening ourselves to rejection and ridicule. Being truly seen can be vulnerable, especially if we have experienced trauma or shame which makes us feel unworthy.
But when it comes to creative expression, vulnerability is not a weakness, but a strength. We can only meet others as deeply as we have met ourselves. Vulnerability is the catalyst for true connection. When we hide ourselves for fear of being disliked, we cut ourselves off from the possibility of being loved.
Knowing that softness is a strength, the artist finds the courage to be vulnerable, displaying their truth in a painting, a poem, a song. This is a moment of intimacy, first with ourselves, then with those who encounter our art.
I have often felt closer to my favorite writers and musicians (people I have never met) than even my friends and family. Art allows for a depth of intimacy that is difficult to find in regular life. In the privacy of her notebook, the writer whispers her deepest secrets. And by sharing her words with others (whether with a few friends or in a bestselling book), a portal into her heart and mind is opened.
Authenticity and vulnerability are magnetic. They draw people in like a campfire on a cold night. In the artist’s emotion we see a reflection of our own. The artist gives us permission to feel, to dream, to be different.
There is no love without intimacy, and there is no intimacy without vulnerability. This is not without risk. Not everyone will understand or appreciate your inner world, just as you can’t be friends or lovers with everyone you meet. Nobody is for everybody, and that’s okay.
The best way to find your people is to share your authentic nature without censoring yourself to fit other people’s expectations. You might not resonate with everyone, but you will attract the right ones.

Thank you, James. This line ‘When we hide ourselves for fear of being disliked, we cut ourselves off from the possibility of being loved’ really felt powerful. It shows the stakes, in a way. We think we’re protecting ourselves by hiding, but we end up missing out on the very thing we want.
